9.   WHY DO WE ADD BREATH VENTS TO LED LIGHT BARS?

Halogen Driving Lights
An incandescent bulb works when electricity passes through its filament. However, during the process, atoms of the wire decay to the point where the wire burns through or breaks. One advantage of halogen lamps is that it is filled with an inert halogen gas that greatly reduces the amount of "evaporation" from the filament. It is much cheaper than any other auxiliary lights available.

However, because halogen lamps have a filament to burn out, its light bulb is more prone to wear and tear. In addition, vibration, poor installation, and the extreme heat produced by the halogen lamp can contribute to the shortening of the bulb life. Halogen lamps usually have energy efficiency of only 5%, with 95% of the electrical input being lost as heat.

HID Driving Lights
HID or, high intensity discharge, lights fare much better than halogen lamps. If halogen lamps are considered the automotive equivalent of household incandescent light bulbs, then HID lamps are definitely equal to the household fluorescent tube, which is 20% energy efficient.

HID lighting technology replaces the filament of the light bulb with a capsule of gas, making an HID driving light longer lasting than a halogen lamp. In addition, the amount of light produced is greater than from a standard halogen bulb. It also consumes less power and more closely approximates the "colour temperature" of natural daylight. HIDs are more durable, too.

However, although HID driving lights produce useful output when first switched on, they usually require a few seconds to come up to full output. Another known disadvantage is that when the power to the lamp is cut off, the arc tube should be cooled a little before the arc can be re-struck and light can be produced again.

Taking note of the advantages of switching to LED technology as discussed above, LED driving lights is perhaps the best option when it comes to auxiliary lighting devices. They are more energy-efficient, longer-lasting, and much safer to the environment.
